My Quicktime method (for a Mac) My method for creating a good movie is to write out individual image frames from IDL using plot objects. In particular note that any plot object, p, can be written to a png using: IDL p.save,'image.png',resolution=96. The resolution=96 ensures the output image has the same size as the image displayed on your screen. Idlau is a tool for launching apps in 'Login items' like Skype when the Mac is idle.

Analyzing Fermi data using OSPEX. OSPEX is an IDL package for spectral analysis of solar data. Through OSPEX, you can read and display data as a function of time or energy, subtract background, select time intervals of interest, select a combination of photon flux model components to describe the data, and fit those components to the spectrum in each time interval selected. I am not aware of any incompatibility for any platform (Windows, Mac, Linux) or IDL versions newer than 5.0, but it has not been tested on anything older than 6.4. If you find any incompatibilites on any version, IDL 5.0 (circe 1997) or later, please let me know.

Note: to find out the CDF version on you IDL, enter: help, /DLM, 'CDF' or run: showcdfversion module (mentioned later) within IDL. If you have an earlier CDF version, then use the patch in this page to upgrade to CDF V3.5.0 beta.

IDL CDF Patch Download and Installation InstructionIDL CDF patch consists of two files: shared CDF library and platform-independent Dynamically Loadable Module (DLM) definition file.
Latest patch created in October 2012 with the beta CDF Version 3.5.0. Make sure to make the downloaded dynamic library (the .so file) for non-Windows executable on your machine. Please contact [email protected] if you need a different CDF version.
